Four British activists involved in the Global Sumud Flotilla, a peaceful effort to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, have returned to the United Kingdom after being detained by Israeli authorities. The group, comprising James Hickey, Malcolm Ducker, Hannah Sharpey-Schafer, and Sid Khan, landed at London's Heathrow Airport following their deportation via Amman, Jordan.

In a surprising turn of events, the volunteers faced further detention upon their arrival on British soil. Their passports were seized by UK border police. While Hickey and Khan were released after a short period, Ducker and Sharpey-Schafer were held at the airport for approximately two hours. "We were abused and detained on arrival in the UK," Hickey stated, highlighting the group's frustration.

The activists provided a detailed account of their ordeal following the interception of their vessel. Sid Khan described the flotilla's seizure by armed commandos in international waters, approximately 50 nautical miles from the Gaza coast. He alleged that detainees were subjected to strip searches, left handcuffed under the sun for hours, denied necessary medicines, and held in overcrowded cells.

A significant point of contention raised by the group was the level of support received from the UK government. They claimed that consular assistance was minimal, especially when compared to the efforts of other European governments which secured faster repatriations for their nationals. Malcolm Ducker labeled the UK's stance as "morally bankrupt," accusing it of prioritizing diplomatic relations with Israel over the welfare of its own citizens.
The incident is part of a larger pattern, as Israeli naval forces recently attacked and seized over 40 boats from the Gaza-bound flotilla, detaining more than 450 activists. Israel has enforced a strict blockade on Gaza for nearly 18 years, recently tightening restrictions and pushing the region toward famine. The activists concluded by emphasizing that their experience pales in comparison to the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by Palestinians in Gaza.
