One Cambodian civilian was killed and three others injured in a cross-border shooting incident, with both countries exchanging accusations of aggression. The clash occurs days after Thailand suspended a recently signed peace agreement, escalating regional tensions.

A civilian has been killed and three others wounded in a cross-border shooting incident between Cambodia and Thailand, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the Southeast Asian neighbors. The clash occurred in Cambodia's Prey Chan village, Banteay Meanchey province, prompting strong diplomatic responses from both governments amid already strained relations.

Cambodia's Official Response

Cambodia's Foreign Ministry issued a strong condemnation of what it described as "unprovoked shooting by Thai forces against Cambodian civilians," characterizing the incident as a serious violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The ministry stated that the action breached international humanitarian law and fundamental principles of both the UN Charter and ASEAN agreements, confirming that a formal protest had been filed with the Thai government.

Thailand's Counterclaim

The Royal Thai Army denied allegations of unprovoked aggression, asserting instead that Cambodian soldiers had initially fired weapons into Thai territory. In an official statement, Thai military authorities said their forces "took cover and returned fire toward the source using only necessary force" in accordance with established rules of engagement to protect national sovereignty and ensure personnel safety.

Broader Diplomatic Context

The violent incident follows Thailand's recent suspension of a peace agreement with Cambodia, which was initially brokered last month in Kuala Lumpur with US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim serving as witnesses. The agreement's suspension came after four Thai soldiers were wounded in a landmine explosion in the border province of Si Sa Ket, further complicating diplomatic efforts to maintain stability in the region.
