China opposes Israeli recognition of Somaliland, backs Somali sovereignty

China has voiced firm opposition to Israel’s recognition of the breakaway region of Somaliland, reaffirming support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Beijing warned against external interference and called on Somaliland to halt its separatist course.
China on Monday joined a growing international chorus opposing Israel’s recognition of the breakaway Somali territory of Somaliland. Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian stated that Beijing is “concerned and firmly opposes” the move, underscoring China’s support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
Rejection of External Interference
Lin emphasized that the Somaliland issue is Somalia’s internal affair and should be resolved by the Somali people in a manner suited to the country’s conditions. He urged nations “outside the region to stop inappropriate interference” and cautioned that “no country should aid and abet separatist forces in other countries for its own selfish gains.” Lin also called on Somaliland authorities to recognize the situation and immediately cease separatist actions and engagement with external forces.
International Response
Israel became the first country to recognize Somaliland as a sovereign state on Friday, drawing swift condemnation from numerous African and Middle Eastern nations, including Türkiye and Qatar. Somaliland has functioned as a de facto independent entity since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not gained widespread international recognition. The Somali government considers Somaliland part of its territory and views any foreign engagement with the region as a violation of its sovereignty.
