China pushes for stable US ties before Trump Beijing visit

China signaled its intention to improve relations with the United States ahead of President Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to Beijing, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi urging stronger dialogue and mutual respect. The discussions come as both powers seek to manage disputes over trade, Taiwan, and regional security while avoiding deeper geopolitical confrontation.
China has called for a more stable relationship with the United States ahead of President Donald Trump’s planned summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing later this month. The message was delivered by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during meetings with a bipartisan group of US senators visiting the Chinese capital before the high-level talks.
Beijing calls for cooperation
According to official statements, Wang said Beijing is prepared to work with Washington to strengthen bilateral ties and reduce tensions between the world’s two largest economies. He stressed that cooperation between China and the US would benefit not only both countries but also the wider international community.
Speaking to the delegation led by Senator Steve Daines, Wang highlighted the differences between the political and economic systems of the two nations, arguing that each country’s model reflects its own historical and cultural background. “We should jointly seek harmony in diversity, becoming partners rather than adversaries,” he said.

Trump-Xi summit approaches
Trump is expected to travel to Beijing on May 14-15 for his second face-to-face meeting with Xi Jinping since their previous summit in South Korea last year. The visit comes at a sensitive moment in US-China relations, with disputes continuing over tariffs, trade restrictions, Taiwan, and military activity in the Asia-Pacific region.
Chinese officials are seeking to stabilize communication channels ahead of the summit as both governments attempt to manage competition without allowing tensions to escalate further.
China rejects hegemony claims
Wang also addressed concerns surrounding China’s growing global influence, saying Beijing would continue pursuing peaceful development rather than seeking dominance. He urged the United States to adopt what he described as a more balanced understanding of China and to respect Beijing’s core interests.
The Chinese foreign minister emphasized that disagreements should be handled through dialogue and diplomacy rather than confrontation, reflecting Beijing’s broader effort to present itself as a stabilizing force in global politics.
Focus on diplomacy and economic ties
The visiting US senators also met Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who called for deeper communication and stronger engagement between the two countries. Analysts view the meetings as part of wider diplomatic efforts to ease friction between Washington and Beijing at a time when global markets and supply chains remain sensitive to tensions between the two powers.
