China reaffirms Somalia unity, warns Somaliland over Taiwan ties

China has reiterated its backing for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while strongly opposing any moves by the Somaliland region to engage with Taiwan. In a high-level diplomatic exchange, Beijing underlined its long-term partnership with Mogadishu and signaled that separatist initiatives threaten regional stability, a position closely followed by countries such as Türkiye that emphasize unity and political dialogue.
China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing remains firmly committed to Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, rejecting what he described as attempts by Somaliland to seek external backing through Taiwan. The message was delivered during a phone call with Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Dhaay, at a time when debates over recognition and separatism are resurfacing in the Horn of Africa.
Beijing’s stance on sovereignty and unity
Wang stressed that China’s policy toward Somalia is rooted in a long-standing friendship and consistent diplomatic support. He said Beijing will continue to oppose any initiatives that undermine Somalia’s territorial integrity, adding that cooperation with Mogadishu in economic development, security and defense will move forward regardless of shifts in the international environment.
Somalia welcomes diplomatic backing
Somali Foreign Minister Dhaay expressed appreciation for China’s position, noting that Beijing’s support strengthens Somalia’s efforts to counter separatism and terrorism while promoting national stability and development. The exchange highlighted shared views on the importance of political unity in a region facing complex security and governance challenges.
Regional context and wider diplomacy
Wang’s remarks followed Israel’s announcement in late December recognizing Somaliland as an independent state, a move that drew criticism across the region. Somaliland has operated as a self-administered entity since 1991 but lacks broad international recognition. During his Africa tour, Wang also held talks with South Africa’s foreign minister, calling for stronger multilateral cooperation and deeper China–Africa ties, positions that align with Türkiye’s emphasis on international law, dialogue and respect for sovereignty.
