China, Russia aim to secure global energy supply despite US pressure

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for deeper energy cooperation with Russia as Beijing faces US pressure to scale back Russian oil imports due to the war in Ukraine. Speaking to a major energy forum in Beijing, Xi said the two nations will safeguard the global energy supply chain and strengthen security in the sector. The message highlights China’s continued strategic partnership with Moscow and its focus on stable resource flows.
China emphasized its commitment to building stronger energy ties with Russia during the 7th China-Russia Energy Business Forum in Beijing, stressing the importance of protecting global supply chains while facing pressure from Washington over Russian oil imports.
Energy partnership reinforced in Beijing
In a written message to the gathering, President Xi underlined that cooperation between China and Russia in the energy field has longstanding roots and remains a key pillar of bilateral relations. He said Beijing will work closely with Moscow to maintain the uninterrupted flow of energy markets and contribute to a more equitable international energy governance structure.
US pressures China on Russian oil
The announcement comes as the United States continues urging major buyers such as China and India to reduce purchases of Russian energy due to the ongoing Ukraine conflict. Despite this, Xi signaled support for joint efforts toward green and low-carbon transitions while ensuring energy security for both countries and global markets.
Putin sends message; forum draws hundreds
Russian President Vladimir Putin also conveyed congratulations to the high-level forum, which brought together government officials, business leaders and experts from over 100 energy companies across the two nations. The event reflects the growing integration of China-Russia economic cooperation amid broader geopolitical tensions.
