China seeks stronger, stable partnership with Australia, says Premier Li

Chinese Premier Li Qiang said Beijing aims to deepen cooperation with Australia in technology, energy, and the digital economy, signaling a desire for “more mature and stable” bilateral ties. The remarks came during talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the ASEAN summit in Malaysia.
China expressed readiness to work closely with Australia to advance what it described as a “more mature and stable” comprehensive strategic partnership. The message came from Premier Li Qiang during a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit held in Malaysia on Monday.
Focus on cooperation and economic potential
According to China’s state-run Xinhua agency, Li said Beijing is prepared to enhance communication with Canberra and expand practical cooperation in emerging sectors such as green technology, high-tech manufacturing, and digital innovation. He called on Australia to ensure a “fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory” environment for Chinese firms operating in the country.
South China Sea tension surfaces
Albanese, for his part, raised concerns over a recent incident in which a Chinese fighter jet forced an Australian surveillance aircraft to change course over the South China Sea. The episode has added fresh tension to bilateral relations, even as both governments signal interest in dialogue.
China-EU relations and broader diplomatic agenda
Li also met with European Council President Antonio Costa, where he noted that relations between China and the European Union are facing “both opportunities and new challenges.” He urged both sides to “keep cooperation on the right track” amid shifting global dynamics.
Australia’s regional investment push
Separately, Albanese addressed the ASEAN-Indo Pacific Forum 2025, announcing that Australia has identified a 20 billion Australian dollar ($13 billion) investment pipeline across Southeast Asia. He said the projects include agricultural ventures in Laos, renewable energy in Thailand, infrastructure development in Vietnam, and logistics expansion through Toll Group’s regional operations.
