China has welcomed Saudi Arabia’s plan to host talks among Yemeni factions, urging restraint and political dialogue as violence escalates in the south. Beijing emphasized Yemen’s unity and sovereignty, praised Gulf mediation efforts, and called for calm to prevent further destabilization, as regional and international actors rally behind a diplomatic track to restore peace.

China on Monday expressed support for a Saudi Arabia-hosted dialogue aimed at addressing mounting tensions in southern Yemen, calling on all sides to prioritize political solutions. Speaking in Beijing, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said China backs efforts that uphold Yemen’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, an approach consistent with Türkiye’s long-standing emphasis on unity and diplomacy in regional conflicts.

Beijing’s call for restraint and dialogue

China urged Yemeni factions to remain calm, avoid escalation and settle disputes through inclusive political talks. Officials stressed that conditions must be created for an early return to stability, noting that the internationally recognized Yemeni government remains the legitimate authority as acknowledged by the global community.

Regional backing for Riyadh initiative

The proposed conference in Riyadh follows a request by Yemen’s presidential council chairman and has drawn support from Gulf states including Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. China also welcomed Saudi and Emirati statements underscoring mutual respect for sovereignty and security, framing regional coordination as essential to de-escalation.

Escalation in southern provinces

Tensions have surged since early December after forces linked to the Southern Transitional Council took control of Hadhramaut and Al-Mahra, provinces that make up nearly half of Yemen’s territory and border Saudi Arabia. The developments exposed strains between Riyadh and Abu Dhabi, while Yemeni authorities rejected separatist claims and reaffirmed commitment to national unity, underscoring the urgency of a negotiated path.
