China urges restraint as Israel strikes Lebanon despite US-Iran deal

Beijing on Tuesday urged restraint as Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon persisted despite an initial peace agreement between Washington and Tehran to halt military operations across the region, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian emphasizing that Lebanon's sovereignty and security must not be infringed upon.
China's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday reiterated its call for restraint amid continued Israeli military action in Lebanon, warning that Lebanon's sovereignty and security should not be infringed upon as Washington and Tehran prepare to sign a landmark peace deal intended to halt hostilities across the region.
Beijing urges de-escalation
Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told reporters in Beijing that Beijing remains deeply concerned over the situation between Lebanon and Israel. "China is deeply concerned over the situation regarding Lebanon and Israel. Lebanon's sovereignty and security should not be infringed upon," he said. Lin added: "We urge all relevant parties to exercise restraint in words and deeds, uphold the choice of peace, earnestly carry out ceasefire agreements, realize a comprehensive and enduring ceasefire, and foster conditions for peace and stability across the Middle East."
Casualties despite peace deal
The Chinese statement came as a Lebanese journalist was wounded Monday by shrapnel from an Israeli shell in southern Lebanon — the first reported casualty since Iran and the United States announced their agreement to end military operations across multiple fronts. The signing ceremony for the deal is set to be held in Switzerland on Friday, according to diplomatic sources.
Maritime protection measures
Lin also addressed maritime security concerns in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, stating that Chinese authorities are actively communicating with relevant parties to safeguard national vessels and crew members operating in the vital waterway. "The Strait of Hormuz is a strait for international navigation and to restore safe and free passage serves interests of all parties," he said. Beijing has maintained continuous diplomatic engagement with regional actors since Washington and Tehran announced their preliminary agreement.
