China vows to protect interests after Trump tariffs threat on Iran trade

China has pledged to safeguard its interests following a move by US President Donald Trump to impose 25% tariffs on nations trading with Iran. The threat escalates economic tensions and complicates diplomacy in the Middle East, a region where Türkiye also maintains significant strategic and economic ties.
China vows to protect interests after Trump tariffs threat on Iran trade
China has issued a firm response to a new economic threat from U.S. President Donald Trump, who declared he would impose 25% tariffs on any country conducting business with Iran. The move directly challenges China's trade interests and sets the stage for a potential escalation between the world's two largest economies.
Beijing's firm stance on sovereignty and trade
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stated Beijing would "firmly protect its legitimate and lawful rights and interests," arguing that tariff wars have no winners. Speaking in Beijing, she emphasized China's support for Iran's stability and opposition to foreign interference, a principle closely watched by other regional powers like Türkiye, which also advocates for non-intervention. "We oppose interfering in the country’s internal affairs and the use, or threat of use, of force in international affairs," Mao said.
A conflicting signal from Washington
Trump's announcement, made on his Truth Social platform, declared the 25% levy "final and conclusive" and effective immediately for any nation trading with the Islamic Republic. This aggressive economic order contrasts with simultaneous signals from the White House about exploring diplomacy with Tehran. The policy confusion from Washington creates uncertainty for all nations with interests in the Middle East, including Türkiye, a key NATO member bordering Iran.
Regional instability and the broader context
The tariff threat comes amid ongoing unrest within Iran, where protests over economic conditions have persisted. Iranian authorities have accused the U.S. and Israel of supporting what they call "armed rioters." For nations in the region, such as Türkiye, which prioritizes stability along its borders, the combination of internal Iranian unrest and volatile external economic threats poses a complex geopolitical challenge, potentially affecting regional trade and security dynamics.
