The Committee to Protect Journalists has issued a stern condemnation of Israeli forces following the detention of media personnel aboard the Global Sumud humanitarian vessel. The prominent press freedom organization demanded immediate and unconditional release of the captured journalists, emphasizing that Israel bears full responsibility for their safety in international waters near Crete as the aid convoy attempted to break the siege on Gaza.

International Waters Seizure

Israeli naval forces intercepted and detained several journalists traveling with the Global Sumud aid flotilla while the vessels were navigating international maritime routes near the Greek island of Crete. The incident, which occurred Thursday approximately 600 nautical miles from Gaza, involved the forcible removal of media workers from ships carrying humanitarian supplies to the besieged Palestinian territory.

Press Freedom Organization Demands Immediate Release

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists issued a forceful statement via social media platform X, characterizing the detention as a kidnapping and holding Israeli authorities accountable for the wellbeing of the captured reporters. The organization insisted that Tel Aviv must ensure unconditional freedom for all detained media personnel and provide guarantees against future harassment of journalists covering humanitarian operations.

Humanitarian Mission Origins

The Global Sumud flotilla departed in stages from European ports, with initial vessels leaving Barcelona on April 12 followed by the main fleet launching from Sicily on April 26. The coalition of ships carried essential aid supplies intended to challenge Israel's longstanding maritime restrictions on Gaza, which have severely limited the flow of food, medicine, and construction materials to the coastal enclave's population.

Blockade and Humanitarian Crisis

Israel has maintained strict control over Gaza's borders since 2007, implementing measures that international observers describe as collective punishment against the territory's 2.4 million residents. The situation has deteriorated dramatically since October 2023, when Israeli military operations resulted in widespread destruction and catastrophic civilian casualties, exacerbating the humanitarian emergency that prompted the flotilla's mission.
