Denmark and Greenland propose NATO Arctic mission amid US pressure

Denmark and Greenland have jointly proposed the establishment of a NATO mission in the Arctic, advancing the idea in talks with alliance Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels. This initiative represents a strategic effort to address regional security concerns through collective defense mechanisms, rather than bilateral pressure.

A Diplomatic Counter to Unilateral Demands

Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, speaking alongside Greenland's Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt, confirmed the proposal was discussed with Rutte. While the NATO chief's response was not disclosed, the proposal itself signals a preference for a framework involving all allies. Poulsen stressed that dialogue with U.S. officials would continue, asserting, "it will not be Denmark that gives up on insisting on dialogue." He also acknowledged the alliance's critical value, noting some statements from U.S. President Donald Trump "really hurt."

Emphasis on Intertwined Defense and Greenland's Voice

Minister Motzfeldt emphasized that cooperative solutions with a focus on mutual defense remain the priority. "All doors remain open," she stated, adding that Greenland's defense is "intertwined with the defence of the United States." She highlighted the importance of representing Greenlandic interests in these high-stakes discussions, saying their work contributes to finding "good solutions" for the people of Greenland.

Context of Strategic Competition

The proposal unfolds against persistent U.S. interest in acquiring Greenland, driven by its strategic location, mineral resources, and concerns about Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic. Trump has linked this goal to tariff threats against allied nations. Both Copenhagen and Nuuk have consistently and firmly rejected any sale of the self-governing territory, reaffirming Danish sovereignty. The NATO mission concept appears designed to reinforce regional security collectively, thereby indirectly bolstering Greenland's position within the existing sovereign framework.
