Dozens of bodies left in homes in Sudan's North Kordofan: doctors

A Sudanese medical group has accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces of preventing families from burying their dead in Bara city, leaving dozens of bodies piled inside homes. The Sudan Doctors Network describes the situation as representing systematic human rights violations amid collapsed health services.
A Sudanese medical organization has reported that dozens of deceased civilians remain trapped inside their homes in Bara city, North Kordofan, after paramilitary forces prevented families from conducting burials. The Sudan Doctors Network issued a statement Tuesday describing how the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have left "the dead trapped in their houses while the living are surrounded by fear, hunger, and thirst" in the recently captured city.
Humanitarian Catastrophe Unfolding
The medical group characterized the RSF's actions in Bara as representing "the most grotesque forms of human rights violations and systematic killings." They reported a rapidly increasing number of missing civilians amid complete communications blackouts and the total absence of functional medical or humanitarian services in the city, creating what they termed a "crime against humanity by every measure."
Health System Collapse and Mass Displacement
According to the doctors' network, health services have completely collapsed in the region, with diseases and malnutrition spreading among vulnerable populations including children, women, and elderly residents. Mass displacement continues under extremely harsh conditions, with most civilians forced to flee on foot without access to food, medicine, or shelter as the humanitarian situation deteriorates rapidly.
International Response and Broader Conflict
The medical organization has appealed to the international community for immediate intervention to stop violations, establish safe corridors for civilians, and allow dignified burial of the deceased. The International Organization for Migration estimates over 38,000 people have fled North and South Kordofan since late October due to escalating violence in the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and RSF that began in April 2023.
