Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan welcomes US President Donald Trump, who is paying an official visit to Turkiye ahead of the 36th NATO Heads of State and Government Summit, at Ankara Airport in Ankara, Turkiye, on July 07, 2026.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday he anticipates a positive outcome on Türkiye's long-running bid to acquire F-35 fighter jets from the United States during the NATO summit in Ankara, citing prior commitments for five aircraft and praising President Donald Trump's reliability on honoring bilateral defense agreements.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday he expects a "favorable decision" on Türkiye's bid to acquire F-35 fighter jets from the United States to emerge from the NATO summit in Ankara, telling US President Donald Trump on the sidelines that the issue has been extensively discussed.

Speaking alongside Trump during the summit in the Turkish capital, Erdogan noted that the F-35 issue was not a new subject in bilateral ties and emphasized previous discussions with Washington. "The F-35 issue is not a new one for us. We have discussed it with the US before, and we received a commitment regarding the five aircraft," he said, referring to earlier negotiations over the advanced fighter jets.

US commitments cited

Erdogan expressed confidence that Washington would honor its earlier commitments, praising Trump's approach to the dispute. "God willing, I believe a favorable decision on the F-35 issue will emerge from this Leaders Summit," he said. "I know that we are positively testing the commitment we previously received from them regarding the F-35s for the future. President Trump always stands by his word," he added.

The meeting marked the latest effort by Ankara to secure the F-35 jets, with Erdogan specifically citing Washington's prior commitment to deliver five aircraft to Türkiye.
