EU warns Middle East situation 'perilous' as US-Israel strike Iran

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas issued a stark warning Saturday regarding the escalating military confrontation in the Middle East, characterizing the latest developments as "perilous" following the coordinated US-Israeli attack on Iranian territory. In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Kallas acknowledged that "Iran's ballistic missile and nuclear programs, as well as its support for armed groups, pose a serious threat to global security," while emphasizing the bloc's commitment to diplomatic solutions despite the outbreak of hostilities.

Diplomatic engagements continue

Kallas confirmed she has conducted discussions with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and other regional counterparts as part of ongoing efforts to explore available diplomatic pathways. The EU foreign policy chief noted that the bloc is coordinating closely with Arab partners to assess possibilities for de-escalation, even as military operations expand. The European Union has previously adopted "strong sanctions" against Iran while maintaining support for negotiations related to the nuclear file, though Saturday's events have severely complicated those efforts.

Civilian protection prioritized

Amid the widening conflict, Kallas stressed that "protection of civilians and international humanitarian law is a priority" for the 27-member bloc. She announced that the EU's consular network is fully mobilized to facilitate departures for European citizens still present in affected areas, with non-essential personnel already being withdrawn as a precautionary measure. The statement reflects growing concern among European capitals about the safety of their nationals as the confrontation between US-Israeli forces and Iran intensifies.

Naval mission on high alert

Kallas also confirmed that the EU's Aspides naval mission remains at an elevated state of readiness in the Red Sea, standing prepared to help maintain access to the vital maritime corridor. The strategic waterway has been a focal point of regional tensions, with disruptions threatening global trade routes. As the United States and Israel pursue what they describe as operations against the "Iranian regime," the EU's naval presence underscores the broader international stakes involved.
