An expert on far-right extremism in Germany warns that neo-Nazi ideas and groups are becoming more visible and influential in everyday life, particularly among youth in economically struggling regions. She criticizes democratic parties for failing to engage young people, leaving a void effectively exploited by groups like the Alternative for Germany (AfD).

Far-right extremist ideologies and their associated networks are increasingly permeating the fabric of daily life across Germany, posing a significant threat to democratic norms. According to Romy Arnold, project manager at MOBIT, an organization dedicated to combating right-wing extremism in Thuringia, dehumanizing attitudes and neo-Nazi thought are now more openly visible on streets, in parliaments, and at the local community level than ever before.

A Nationwide Phenomenon with Deep Regional Roots

Arnold emphasized that the rise of the far right is no longer confined to eastern Germany but has solidified into a nationwide challenge. The electoral success of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which continues to gain vote share in every election, is a key indicator. In some municipalities, particularly in structurally weak regions suffering from industrial decline and state withdrawal, the AfD's vote share has reached as high as 50% in local elections. This political success is bolstered by a parallel rise in right-wing combat sports networks, youth groups, and loosely organized extremist cells.

The Youth Disconnect: Anger and Political Neglect

A central concern highlighted by Arnold is the far right's effective outreach to young people. She argues that mainstream democratic parties are failing to address the anger and frustration felt by a generation grappling with a weak education system, a lack of opportunity, and perceived sacrifices made during the COVID-19 pandemic. "In the most recent state elections in Thuringia, there was only one party that directly addressed young people with its own campaign... And that was the AfD," Arnold stated. This political vacuum, she warns, is being filled by extremist groups that offer a simplistic sense of identity and scapegoats for complex social problems.

Social Media as an Accelerant and the Challenge for Democracy

The expert pointed to social media platforms like WhatsApp, TikTok, and Instagram as major accelerants for radicalization, allowing far-right messages to reach youth faster and more effectively than traditional recruitment methods. While cautioning against outright bans that could punish the wrong people, Arnold called for strategies that strengthen democratic participation and critical media literacy among the young. She stressed that defending democracy in some areas has become perilous, noting that standing up to the far right can sometimes become "a matter of personal safety," underscoring the urgent need for stronger political and institutional support for individuals and organizations on the front lines of this struggle.
