France will contribute ground force deployments to NATO's Forward Land Forces (FLF) in Finland, including a battle unit integrated into the formation, according to a joint statement by Helsinki, Stockholm and Paris released during the alliance summit in Ankara on Wednesday. “France will contribute with ground forces deployments to rotations of FLF Finland, including a battle unit, which will be integrated into the FLF formation and deployed to the Area of Operations,” the statement said.
Strategic commitment
Beyond the battle unit deployment, France will train critical enablers alongside the FLF Finland battlegroup on a temporary basis, the statement noted. “France's participation in FLF Finland is a clear manifestation of our joint commitment to a stronger Europe in a stronger NATO,” it added, underscoring the trilateral cooperation.
High North defense
Established in June 2026, FLF Finland's battlegroup serves as NATO's ninth Forward Land Forces multinational formation, specifically designed to enhance the alliance's deterrence and defense capabilities in the High North. The French contribution comes as leaders gathered in Türkiye's capital for the alliance summit.
