French President Emmanuel Macron announced Thursday that Paris will strengthen cooperation with the Lebanese Armed Forces, providing armored vehicles and logistical support. Macron urgently called on Israel's prime minister not to expand the war into Lebanon and demanded Hezbollah cease fire, as cross-border hostilities intensify following the US-Israeli offensive on Iran.

French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled a new initiative Thursday to reinforce Lebanon's military capabilities as fighting between Hezbollah and Israel intensifies along the border. In a detailed statement on the social media platform X, Macron announced that "France will strengthen its cooperation with the Lebanese Armed Forces and will provide them with armored transport vehicles, as well as operational and logistical support," signaling Paris's determination to bolster Lebanon's state institutions amid the escalating crisis.

Macron demands mutual de-escalation

The French leader outlined a dual demand aimed at both parties to the conflict following consultations with Lebanese authorities. "Hezbollah must immediately cease its fire toward Israel. Israel must refrain from any ground intervention or large-scale operation on Lebanese territory," Macron wrote, establishing clear red lines for both sides. He revealed that "the Lebanese authorities have given me their commitment to take control of the positions held by Hezbollah and to fully assume responsibility for security across the entire national territory," adding "I give them my full support."

Humanitarian concerns prompt aid delivery

Expressing profound concern about civilian displacement, Macron announced the immediate dispatch of humanitarian assistance to Lebanon, confirming that several tons of medicine are being delivered along with shelter solutions. His intervention comes as Lebanese communities increasingly bear the brunt of expanded hostilities, with cross-border attacks displacing thousands and overwhelming local infrastructure.

Warnings to regional powers

In a message directed at multiple actors, Macron issued a series of urgent appeals: "At this moment of great danger, I call on the Israeli Prime Minister not to expand the war to Lebanon. I call on Iranian leaders not to further draw Lebanon into a war that is not its own." Addressing Hezbollah directly, he demanded the group "renounce its weapons, respect the national interest, show that it is not a militia taking orders from abroad, and allow the Lebanese to come together to preserve their country."

Conflict widens despite ceasefire agreement

The renewed hostilities follow Monday's escalation after Hezbollah launched rockets and drones at Israeli military positions in response to ongoing Israeli strikes and the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader in US-Israeli attacks. According to Lebanese authorities, Israeli attacks since Monday have killed at least 72 people and wounded nearly 450. The violence represents a significant breakdown of the November 2024 ceasefire agreement, which Israel has repeatedly violated through near-daily strikes that have left hundreds dead and wounded. The current escalation must be understood within the broader context of Israel's campaign against Lebanon, which began in October 2023 and intensified into full-scale war in September 2024, claiming more than 4,000 lives and wounding approximately 17,000.
