The G20 leaders' summit has commenced in Johannesburg, marking the first time the gathering is hosted on African soil. With 42 nations participating under the theme "solidarity, equality and sustainability," the two-day meeting will address debt relief for developing nations, climate adaptation, and clean energy transition, though the US is notably absent.

The G20 summit has officially opened in Johannesburg, South Africa, bringing together world leaders for crucial discussions on global economic cooperation. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the opening address at this historic gathering, which marks the first time the prestigious forum has been held on the African continent since its establishment in 1999.

Focus on Development and Climate Priorities

The summit's agenda, aligned with South Africa's theme of "solidarity, equality and sustainability," prioritizes debt sustainability for low-income countries as a key obstacle to inclusive growth in developing economies. Climate adaptation strategies and facilitating the transition to clean energy sources also feature prominently in the scheduled working sessions, reflecting urgent global environmental concerns.

Notable US Absence and Bilateral Engagements

A significant development is the absence of the United States, a founding G20 member, with President Donald Trump boycotting the event over disputed claims regarding South Africa's domestic policies. Despite this gap in participation, leaders from other member states are expected to conduct numerous bilateral meetings on the sidelines, with 42 countries represented at the Johannesburg Expo Center.

Composition and Strategic Direction

The G20 comprises 19 individual nations along with two regional bodies—the European Union and the African Union—representing approximately 85% of global GDP and two-thirds of the world's population. Beyond the specific thematic discussions, the summit will address internal cooperation mechanisms and the strategic future direction of the influential economic forum.
