G7 finance ministers have emphasized the need for responsible and stable supply chains for critical minerals, warning against export controls and non-market policies. The virtual meeting also reaffirmed unwavering support for Ukraine.

Finance ministers from the G7 advanced economies have underscored the strategic necessity of securing stable and responsible supply chains for critical minerals. In a virtual meeting chaired by Canada's Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne on Monday, the group highlighted the importance of transparent, diversified, and sustainable practices in this vital sector.

Broadening the dialogue on supply chain security

The meeting expanded beyond the core G7 members, inviting representatives from key mineral-producing and consuming nations including Australia, Chile, India, Mexico, and the Republic of Korea. Canada sought to recognize the strategic role these countries play in global supply chains. The ministers reviewed progress under the G7 Critical Minerals Action Plan, adopted in June, which aims to build secure and ethical mineral networks.

Warning against market distortions and supporting Ukraine

A key concern raised was the negative impact of "non-market policies," such as export controls, on critical minerals supply chains. The ministers warned such measures could lead to price volatility and hinder global economic growth. Alongside economic security, the G7 reaffirmed its "unwavering support for Ukraine," welcoming a new staff-level agreement with the IMF and confirming that support for Kyiv will remain a priority as France assumes the group's presidency in January.

The geopolitical and economic stakes

Critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements are essential for technologies powering the green energy transition, electronics, and defense systems. The G7's focus reflects a growing recognition that supply chain resilience is not merely an economic issue but a core component of national and energy security, especially in reducing strategic dependencies on single sources or unstable regions.
