Gaza families torch tents as truce fails to halt Israeli fire

Displaced Palestinians in Gaza's Zeitoun district have set fire to their own tents in a dramatic protest against deteriorating security conditions and unlivable standards. The desperate act at Dar al-Salam camp highlights mounting frustration over continued Israeli gunfire despite an October ceasefire agreement, as residents demand urgent protection and humanitarian aid amid severe shortages of water, food, and essential supplies.
Desperate Protest at Dar al-Salam Camp
Daily Struggle for Survival
Residents describe an existence stripped of basic dignity and security. Asmaa Arhim, a displaced civilian previously wounded by gunfire, explained that families instinctively dive for cover on the ground whenever shooting begins, noting that canvas walls offer scant protection against incoming rounds. She emphasized that the community has endured months without reliable access to clean water, forcing dangerous journeys to secure this fundamental necessity while food assistance arrives unpredictably and in insufficient quantities. The protesters argue that these temporary shelters no longer provide safety or a dignified life, rendering the dramatic destruction of their own homes a symbolic but necessary act of defiance.
Violence Persists Despite Truce
The October 2025 ceasefire agreement, which saw Israeli forces withdraw from the "yellow line" area, has failed to ensure civilian safety according to camp inhabitants. Wissam Abdullah, another resident who has sustained two gunshot wounds, contrasted the current unpredictable danger with the patterns of open warfare, explaining that residents previously could anticipate bombardment but now face random gunfire during routine activities. He noted that a bullet was recently extracted from his body after weeks of suffering, underscoring the gap between diplomatic agreements and ground realities. This sentiment reflects a broader pattern of violence that has claimed at least 824 Palestinian lives and injured 2,316 others since the truce took effect, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Humanitarian Catastrophe in Gaza
The Dar al-Salam camp represents merely one node in a territory-wide crisis affecting 2.4 million Palestinians, including 1.5 million internally displaced persons. Israeli restrictions continue to block adequate flows of food, medical supplies, and shelter materials into the besieged enclave. The current phase of conflict, which began in October 2023, has resulted in over 72,000 fatalities and 172,000 injuries according to official Palestinian statistics. Despite international calls for adherence to the ceasefire terms, the continued blockade and sporadic military actions have created an environment where displaced civilians see no alternative but to destroy their own meager possessions to highlight their desperation.
