German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has framed Russia's war against Ukraine as a direct and existential threat to European security, warning that the conflict is part of a broader Russian strategy targeting the continent. In his New Year's message to the nation on Wednesday, Merz asserted that the ongoing aggression is not a distant conflict but a clear danger to Germany and its allies.

"A terrible war is raging in Europe, one that poses a direct threat to our freedom and our security," Merz stated. He emphasized that the war continues with "undiminished intensity" and dismissed any notion of detachment. "We are seeing more and more clearly that Russia’s aggression was and is part of a plan targeted against the whole of Europe," he said, highlighting that Germany now faces daily sabotage, espionage, and cyberattacks as a result of its support for Kyiv.
