'Good news' expected soon on Iran deal after Pakistan seeks deadline extension: CNN

"Good news" is expected soon after Pakistan asked President Trump to extend the Iran deadline, a source told CNN, adding that discussions were steered directly by Pakistan's army chief. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had proposed a two-week ceasefire and requested Trump extend his deadline.
"Good news" is expected soon, a source said Tuesday, after Pakistan asked US President Donald Trump to extend the Iran deadline, according to CNN. Citing a regional source, CNN said "some good news is expected from both sides soon" and that discussions were steered directly by Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir. The source added that a deal is expected to be closed tonight, according to the report.
Pakistan's proposal
The latest development came after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif asked warring parties to observe a two-week ceasefire to "allow diplomacy to achieve conclusive termination of war" in a post on X. Sharif also asked Trump to extend his deadline on Iran by two weeks and for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz during that period. The White House said Tuesday that Trump has been made aware of Sharif's proposed ceasefire and that "a response will come."
Trump's deadline
Trump had set an 8 pm ET Tuesday deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and accept a deal, threatening to destroy every bridge and power plant in Iran if his demands were not met. The deadline passed without a reported agreement, but Pakistan's mediation efforts suggest ongoing diplomatic activity.

Conflict context
The US and Israel launched a joint offensive on Iran on Feb. 28, killing more than 1,400 people according to Iranian authorities, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has restricted movement through the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting roughly 20 million barrels of daily oil traffic, while retaliating with strikes on Israel and Gulf states.
