Greta Thunberg recounts alleged abuse during Israeli detention after Gaza Flotilla

Climate activist Greta Thunberg details a severe five-day detention by Israeli authorities, alleging physical violence, psychological intimidation, and deliberate deprivation of water and medicine. She states her experience is minor compared to the plight of Palestinians and criticizes the Swedish Foreign Ministry for its inadequate response to the incident.
Famed climate activist Greta Thunberg has publicly described what she alleges was a brutal five-day detention by Israeli forces, following her participation in the Global Sumud Flotilla's attempt to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. In an interview with Swedish media, Thunberg recounted incidents of beating, kicking, and psychological torment during her time in custody earlier this month.
Allegations of Physical and Psychological Mistreatment
Thunberg described the ordeal beginning when masked Israeli soldiers boarded the vessel. She claimed detainees were forced to sit in extreme heat while soldiers destroyed aid supplies. "We begged for water. The guards walked in front of the bars the whole time, laughing and holding up their water bottles," she was quoted as saying. Upon arrival at Ashdod port, she alleged the violence escalated, saying, "I was dragged... and they hit and kicked me while an Israeli flag touched me." She also reported guards using misogynistic insults in Swedish and taking selfies with her while she was restrained.
Systematic Deprivation and Threats
The conditions inside the detention facility were described as harsh and deliberately inhumane. Thunberg spoke of threats of being gassed, being forced to kneel for hours, and being held in overcrowded cells with little sustenance. She stated that critical medications, including insulin and heart medication, were confiscated and discarded in front of the detainees. "Everything they do is extremely violent," Thunberg told Aftonbladet, also noting she saw bullet holes and bloodstains on the prison walls.
Focus on Palestinian Plight and Swedish Government Response
Despite her personal experience, the Swedish activist consistently redirected focus toward the situation in Gaza. "What we have been through is only a small, small part of what Palestinians have experienced," she emphasized. Furthermore, Thunberg and other detainees criticized the Swedish Foreign Ministry, accusing it of failing to provide effective consular support. According to reports, official communications omitted crucial details about the lack of water and medical care. The group now plans to file formal complaints with the Swedish Parliamentary Ombudsman.
