Israel seizes Gaza-bound flotilla near Crete, Hamas slams 'piracy'

Israeli naval forces carried out a maritime operation in the eastern Mediterranean Sea near the Greek island of Crete, intercepting vessels participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla. The operation occurred hundreds of nautical miles from Israeli territorial waters. According to official statements from Tel Aviv, more than twenty vessels were boarded and seized during the incident. The Global Sumud Flotilla departed from Sicily approximately two weeks prior to the interception, comprising fifty-eight vessels loaded with humanitarian supplies. Organizers designed the initiative specifically to challenge Israel's longstanding maritime restrictions on the Palestinian territory. Participants sought to deliver essential aid to the two million-plus residents of Gaza while drawing international attention to what they describe as an illegal siege preventing the free movement of goods and people.
