Harsh winter storms devastate displaced civilians in Gaza

Severe winter storms are compounding the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, destroying fragile shelters and leaving thousands of displaced Palestinians exposed to the elements. Heavy rains and strong winds since Saturday have collapsed tents and caused flooding, worsening conditions for a population already enduring war and siege.
Shelter infrastructure collapses across the strip
The intense weather has nearly completely destroyed shelter facilities in temporary camps across northern and central Gaza and around Khan Younis. In Khan Younis, sea surges have ruined limited personal belongings and aid supplies. Displaced families report that thousands, especially children and the elderly, were forced to spend the night in the open on wet ground, with heating and dry food now almost unavailable.
Meteorological warnings with no means to prepare
The Palestinian Meteorological Department has issued warnings of dangerous wind speeds, increased flood risk, and hazardous ground conditions. However, residents of Gaza have no practical means to heed these alerts. Experts note the existing tents are far below international standards, and more durable shelters, prefabricated structures, and basic infrastructure equipment cannot be imported due to Israeli restrictions on crossings.
A deepening crisis with worse weather expected
Israel's restriction of food, medicine, fuel, and shelter materials continues to perpetuate the crisis. As the current storm persists, meteorologists warn that a new, more potent low-pressure system is expected to hit Gaza starting today, threatening even greater suffering for its vulnerable population.
