Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has launched a fierce critique of EU leadership, accusing Germany's top politicians of driving Europe toward conflict. He described the alliance of the German Chancellor, the EU Commission President, and the EPP leader as warmongers shaping a dangerous policy.

In a sharply critical speech, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán accused the European Union's leadership of engaging in "war preparations" and claimed the bloc is now directed by what he termed a "German war troika." Speaking at an event in Budapest on Monday, the Hungarian leader targeted German politicians as the "biggest warmongers," escalating his long-running disputes with Brussels over foreign policy and sovereignty.

Defining the 'Troika' and Its Influence

Orbán specifically named three figures: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Manfred Weber, President of the European People's Party (EPP), the largest political group in the European Parliament. "Europe is now run by a German war troika," Orbán stated, asserting that this group is "shaping Europe’s war policy today." The EPP, which has held a dominant position in EU institutions for over two decades, provides a significant power base for the policies Orbán opposes, particularly regarding support for Ukraine.

A Warning and a Call to Halt

The Hungarian premier issued a stark warning about the consequences of current EU policy direction. He argued that the alleged war preparations must cease, or "our grandchildren will have to pay the price." This rhetoric frames the EU's stance on Ukraine and collective defense not as a necessity for security, but as a reckless choice that will burden future generations. His comments represent some of his most direct and inflammatory criticism to date regarding German influence within the Union.

Context of Hungary's Independent Foreign Policy Stance

Orbán's remarks are consistent with his government's pattern of diverging from mainstream EU positions on major issues, including the war in Ukraine, migration, and rule-of-law standards. Budapest has repeatedly criticized EU sanctions on Russia and blocked or delayed various aid packages for Kyiv, positioning itself as a vocal advocate for peace negotiations. This independent, often confrontational, stance has created significant friction between Hungary and other member states, particularly those in Western Europe.

Türkiye's Perspective on EU Internal Divisions

From Ankara, such visible fractures within the European Union are observed with strategic interest. As a key regional player and a candidate for EU membership, Türkiye's complex relationship with the bloc is affected by its internal cohesion. A divided Europe, particularly one embroiled in debates over fundamental issues like war and peace, can be a more unpredictable partner for Türkiye on matters ranging from migration cooperation to trade and energy security. Orbán's vocal opposition underscores the persistent lack of a fully unified European foreign policy, a reality that shapes Türkiye's own diplomatic engagements with the continent.
