Indonesia School Collapse Death Toll Reaches 61, Search Continues

The death toll from the catastrophic collapse of a school building in Indonesia has risen to 61, according to rescue officials. The incident occurred at the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo Regency, part of East Java province, where the structure gave way on September 29, leaving numerous students and staff trapped beneath the rubble.

Search and rescue operations persist at the disaster site, with teams focusing on specific sections of the collapsed compound. Nanang Sigit, head of the East Java Search and Rescue Office, confirmed that rescue workers, supported by heavy machinery, are now concentrating their efforts on the northern area of the site, which was not connected to the main building structure.

To date, emergency responders have successfully located 167 individuals connected to the school collapse tragedy. This figure includes 104 survivors who were rescued from the debris, alongside the recovered bodies of the 61 deceased victims, highlighting the scale of the disaster that struck the educational institution.

The building failure at the Indonesian Islamic boarding school represents one of the most significant structural collapse incidents in the region's recent history. As the search operation continues, authorities are working to account for all missing individuals while investigating the circumstances that led to the structural failure of the educational facility.
