Iran forensic authority: Over 3,000 killed in US-Israeli attacks since Feb. 28

More than 3,000 people have been killed in US-Israeli attacks across Iran since Feb. 28, Iran's Forensic Authority said Thursday, with about 40% of bodies initially unidentifiable. The reported toll could not be independently verified, coming as a two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran took effect.
More than 3,000 people have been killed in US-Israeli attacks across Iran since Feb. 28, Iran's Forensic Authority said Thursday. Abbas Masjedi Arani, head of the authority, said about 40% of the bodies could not initially be identified following the attacks. Speaking to Iranian outlet Mizan, Masjedi Arani said authorities relied on expertise developed during the 12-day war last June to identify victims and return remains to their families.
Identification efforts
He said the forensic authority, working with the judiciary, had mobilized all available resources to process the casualties, adding that identification efforts were ongoing. The reported toll of more than 3,000 people killed could not be independently verified.
Ceasefire context
Iran and the US announced a two-week truce on Tuesday aimed at paving the way for a final agreement to end the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on Feb. 28. The ceasefire was brokered with Pakistan's mediation, with talks scheduled to begin in Islamabad on Friday.

Continued violence
Despite the ceasefire, Israel launched simultaneous airstrikes on Lebanon just hours after the truce was announced, killing 254 people. Iran has warned it could suspend the ceasefire if attacks on Lebanon continue, while the US has stated that Lebanon was not included in the agreement.
