The death toll from ongoing protests in Iran over economic grievances has risen to 29, according to the activist-run HRANA news agency. The nine days of demonstrations, spreading across 27 provinces, have also resulted in hundreds of arrests and dozens of injuries.
The death toll from ongoing nationwide protests in Iran has risen to 29, according to a report by the activist-run Iran Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA). The demonstrations, now in their ninth day, were sparked by the sharp devaluation of the national currency and deepening economic hardship.
Casualty Figures and Protest Scope
HRANA's report stated that among the dead are 27 protesters and two individuals affiliated with security forces. The protests have spread to 27 of Iran's 31 provinces across at least 257 locations, resulting in 64 injuries—many from pellet and plastic bullets—and 1,203 arrests. Iranian authorities have not released official casualty figures. The semi-official Fars News Agency earlier reported that 250 police officers and 45 members of the Basij militia were injured.
International Reaction and US Warnings
The unrest has drawn sharp warnings from US President Donald Trump. In social media posts, Trump stated that if Iran "shoots and violently kills peaceful protesters," the United States would intervene, adding that Iran would face a "very serious blow" from the US. The protests began on December 28, 2025, at Tehran's Grand Bazaar and have since expanded across the country, reflecting widespread public frustration over economic conditions.
