Iran reports loss of military drone after mission over international waters

Iranian media report that an IRGC-operated reconnaissance drone lost contact after completing a mission in international waters. This comes hours after US Central Command stated it shot down an Iranian drone in the Arabian Sea, highlighting escalating tensions between the two nations.
Iran has announced the loss of contact with a military drone following what it described as a routine surveillance mission over international waters. The report from Iranian media emerged shortly after the United States military claimed to have downed an Iranian unmanned aerial vehicle in the same region, pointing to a potential clash in narratives and rising bilateral friction.
Iran's Account of the Mission
According to a source quoted by the semi-official Tasnim News Agency on Tuesday, the drone, identified as a Shahed-129 model operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was conducting a "routine and legal mission" involving reconnaissance and imaging. The source stated the drone successfully transmitted its collected data to a control center before communications were severed, with the cause currently under investigation.
The Conflicting US Version
Hours before the Iranian report, US Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins provided a different account. He stated that a US fighter jet shot down an Iranian drone in the Arabian Sea after it approached an American aircraft carrier. Hawkins emphasized that US forces are committed to protecting personnel and assets in the region. The conflicting statements were not directly reconciled in either nation's initial reports.
Context of Heightened Regional Tensions
This incident occurs against a backdrop of significantly elevated tensions between Washington and Tehran. A substantial US naval buildup in the Persian Gulf, coupled with repeated threats of military action from President Donald Trump, has created a volatile atmosphere. Such encounters between military assets increase the risk of unintended escalation in the strategically vital waterway.
