Iran has reaffirmed its commitment to diplomacy while maintaining readiness to respond to any potential escalation, as regional tensions linked to the US-Israeli conflict continue to shape international engagement.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made the remarks during talks in Beijing with Wang Yi, according to a statement from Iran’s Foreign Ministry, outlining Tehran’s dual-track approach of negotiation and deterrence.

Diplomacy alongside deterrence

Araghchi said Iran remains “serious and steadfast” in pursuing diplomatic solutions, while also fully prepared to respond to any “malicious act.” He briefed his Chinese counterpart on ongoing negotiations with the United States, mediated by Pakistan, aimed at ending the conflict.

He also commended China’s stance opposing what he described as violations of international law during the 40-day confrontation.

China backs political solution

Wang Yi reaffirmed Beijing’s support for Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while opposing the use of force in resolving disputes. He warned that continued conflict would have far-reaching consequences beyond the region, impacting global stability.

China reiterated its position that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path toward resolving the crisis.

UN role and regional tensions

Araghchi expressed hope that China, currently holding the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council, would play a constructive role in preventing further escalation and safeguarding international peace.

The meeting comes amid heightened tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route affected by the conflict.

Broader diplomatic and economic ties

Beyond security issues, the two sides discussed expanding economic and trade cooperation, agreeing to continue high-level consultations. The visit precedes a planned summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in Beijing on May 14–15, underscoring the broader geopolitical context.

The talks marked the first in-person meeting between Araghchi and Wang since the escalation began in late February, following earlier phone discussions during the conflict.
