Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called on the BRICS bloc to assume a constructive role in upholding regional and international stability amid escalating tensions. During a phone conversation with his Indian counterpart, he stressed the need for global bodies to condemn military aggression against Tehran. The dialogue follows recent joint attacks on Iran by the US and Israel.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi emphasized the necessity for the BRICS group of nations to actively contribute to maintaining peace and security in the current volatile climate. During a telephone discussion with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday, he urged the bloc to fulfill its responsibilities in supporting both regional and global stability.

Call for Multilateral Action

India currently holds the rotating chairmanship of the 11-member alliance, which includes major emerging economies such as China, Russia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. According to a statement from Iran's foreign ministry, Araghchi highlighted BRICS' significance as a platform for fostering multilateral cooperation. He asserted that it is "essential" for the institution to play a productive part at this critical juncture in safeguarding security worldwide.

The Iranian minister also underscored the "necessity" for regional and international organizations to formally denounce what he described as "military aggression against Iran" amid ongoing confrontations with the United States and Israel. This latest diplomatic outreach marks the fourth such conversation since joint US-Israeli military action resulted in over 1,300 fatalities, including Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Regional Fallout and Diplomatic Engagement

During the call, Araghchi briefed his Indian counterpart on the latest developments stemming from the "aggression and atrocities committed by the United States and the Israeli regime." He elaborated on the broader consequences these actions pose for stability and security across the region and beyond. Jaishankar acknowledged the discussion on social media platform X, stating simply that they "discussed bilateral matters as also BRICS related issues."

Separately, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday, expressing "deep concern" over the rising tensions in the Middle East. The diplomatic flurry comes as Iran has launched retaliatory drone and missile strikes targeting both Israeli territory and Gulf nations that host American military assets, further escalating the cycle of violence in an already volatile region.
