Iranian crude reaches India under US waiver, TankerTrackers says

Two million barrels of Iranian crude have arrived in India under a temporary US sanctions waiver issued on March 20, according to TankerTrackers. The delivery marks the first public resumption of Iranian oil imports by India since 2019, as global energy markets are disrupted by the war in the Middle East and the partial closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian crude oil has once again reached Indian shores after a seven‑year hiatus, enabled by a temporary US sanctions waiver. TankerTrackers data released Friday showed that two million barrels of Iranian oil were delivered to India, with the cargo loaded on or before March 20. The shipment was permitted under Iran General License U, issued by the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control on March 20, which authorises transactions related to the sale, delivery and offloading of Iranian crude and petroleum products loaded on vessels on or before that date, through April 19.
Temporary Window for Disrupted Flows
The license covers docking, anchoring, tug assistance, bunkering, inspections, pilotage and discharge of covered cargoes, creating a brief corridor for previously loaded Iranian oil shipments to complete delivery. India officially announced the resumption of oil purchases from Iran on Saturday, the first such public declaration since 2019, when US waivers for buying sanctioned Iranian oil were not renewed for buyers. The decision comes amid severe disruptions to global energy supplies caused by the ongoing US‑Israeli war on Iran and the subsequent restriction of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Strategic Implications for Türkiye
The partial reopening of Iranian crude flows to Asia highlights the growing pressure on energy‑importing nations to secure alternative supply routes. For Türkiye, which relies heavily on imported oil and natural gas, the instability in the Gulf underscores the strategic importance of diversifying transit corridors. Ankara has consistently advocated for the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and has promoted its own Middle Corridor and Development Road projects as stable, land‑based alternatives to sea routes vulnerable to military conflict. The resumption of Iranian oil shipments to India, while limited, may signal a gradual re‑engagement with Iranian energy supplies, though long‑term contracts remain uncertain pending the outcome of the US‑Iran talks in Islamabad.
