Iran's top security official, Ali Larijani, has arrived in Muscat for high-level talks with Omani leaders. The visit follows the recent resumption of indirect nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington, which Oman is mediating.

Iran's senior security official, Ali Larijani, has arrived in Oman for discussions expected to focus on the recently revived nuclear talks with the United States. The visit to Muscat, reported by Iran's state news agency IRNA on Tuesday, comes just days after indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington resumed under Omani mediation.

High-level meetings in Muscat

Larijani was welcomed upon arrival by Sultan bin Muhammad al-Numani, the minister of Oman's Royal Office. The Iranian official is scheduled to hold talks with Oman's Sultan Haitham bin Tariq al Said and Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi during his visit. Larijani is leading a high-level delegation, and the discussions are set to cover bilateral cooperation as well as recent regional and international developments.

Context of the diplomatic push

The trip is directly linked to the nuclear negotiations that restarted in Muscat last Friday after an eight-month suspension. Those talks were halted following a conflict between Iran and Israel in June of last year, which included U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Larijani's consultations with Omani mediators are seen as crucial for outlining the agenda and expectations for the next round of discussions between Iran and the United States.

Oman's role as regional mediator

Oman has long served as a neutral diplomatic channel between Iran and Western powers. Its continued mediation underscores the Sultanate's strategic role in facilitating dialogue aimed at de-escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf. The visit highlights the ongoing effort to sustain diplomatic momentum despite a background of regional instability and military posturing.
