Irish president’s Christmas message spotlights wars in Palestine, Ukraine, Sudan

In her annual Christmas address, Irish President Catherine Connolly voiced solidarity with those suffering in Palestine, Ukraine, and Sudan, citing Ireland's own history of conflict and displacement as a source of deep understanding.
In her first Christmas message as president, Catherine Connolly of Ireland expressed solidarity with millions worldwide enduring the "devastating impacts" of war and displacement, specifically naming the people of Palestine, Ukraine, and Sudan. She connected these global crises to Ireland's historical experience with conflict and forced emigration.
Drawing Parallels to Ireland's Historical Experience
Speaking in both Irish and English, President Connolly stated, "Our own history, marked by forced emigration and loss, gives us a lived understanding of the brutal realities of dispossession, hunger and war." Her message extended thoughts to those missing loved ones, struggling, or feeling alone during the holiday season.
Gratitude for Defense Forces on Overseas Missions
The president also expressed deep gratitude to members of the Irish Defense Forces stationed abroad over Christmas, separated from their families while "safeguarding peace and protecting some of the most vulnerable members of our shared global family." Her address comes amid ongoing violations of the ceasefire in Gaza, a protracted civil war in Sudan creating a severe humanitarian crisis, and continuing efforts to end Russia's war in Ukraine.
