Israel cuts water and electricity to UNRWA headquarters in East Jerusalem

Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen confirmed that water and electricity supplies to the UNRWA headquarters in occupied East Jerusalem have been disconnected, repeating Israeli allegations that the agency is linked to Hamas.
Israeli authorities have cut off water and electricity to the headquarters of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in occupied East Jerusalem, Energy Minister Eli Cohen announced on Wednesday. Cohen stated he personally oversaw the utility disconnection at the UNRWA compound and posted on social media platform X, “By word and by deed, I have closed the tap on UNRWA.”
Background of Escalation
The move follows a series of Israeli actions against UNRWA in East Jerusalem. At the end of 2024, Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, banned the agency from operating in the city. In early 2025, the Israeli government ordered UNRWA to vacate its headquarters in Sheikh Jarrah. On January 22, 2026, Israeli forces raided the compound, seized the site, and demolished buildings inside, claiming the land belongs to Israel—a claim UNRWA rejects.
Israel’s Allegations and UNRWA’s Role
Cohen reiterated Israel’s longstanding accusations that UNRWA is linked to Hamas, allegations that both the agency and the United Nations have consistently denied. Established in 1949, UNRWA is the primary humanitarian provider for Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank, and Gaza, delivering essential services including food, healthcare, education, and shelter.
