The Israeli army carried out demolitions and explosions in Khiam and Taybeh overnight, despite a US‑sponsored ceasefire framework signed June 26. The latest escalation comes as new Lebanon‑Israel talks are due in Rome next week. Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported 4,321 killed and 12,203 injured since March 2.
The Israeli military conducted a series of demolitions in the southern Lebanese town of Khiam and detonated explosives in nearby Taybeh overnight Wednesday into Thursday, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA). The blasts—including a powerful explosion in Khiam followed by four more—were heard across southern Lebanon, highlighting continued Israeli military activity despite a recent ceasefire agreement.
Talks scheduled despite ongoing operations
The operations came less than a day after Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announced that a new round of talks between Israel and Lebanon would be held in Rome next week. They also followed the signing of a US‑sponsored framework agreement on June 26, which provided for a phased Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory. The demolitions underscore the fragility of the arrangement and the persistence of hostilities on the ground.
Human toll and occupation
Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported Wednesday that the death toll from Israel’s campaign in the country has reached 4,321, with 12,203 injured since March 2. Israeli forces continue to occupy areas in southern Lebanon—some held for decades and others seized during the 2023‑2024 war. During the latest offensive, Israeli troops advanced more than 10 kilometers into Lebanese territory.
