Israeli troops conducted a ground incursion into Syria's southwestern Quneitra province, establishing a checkpoint and briefly detaining two Syrian men before releasing them. The raid, supported by low-flying warplanes, is part of a pattern of escalating Israeli military operations in southern Syria.

Israeli military forces conducted a ground incursion into southwestern Syria's Quneitra province on Friday, temporarily detaining two Syrian civilians at an impromptu checkpoint. According to Syrian state media, the two men were stopped and held before being released later the same day, though no further details were provided.

Details of the military operation

The operation began at dawn, with an Israeli force consisting of eight military vehicles advancing from the Adnaniyah area into the Quneitra countryside. The vehicles moved through several villages including Umm Al-Azam and Ruwaihina. The checkpoint where the detentions occurred was reportedly established between the town of Umm Batna and the village of Al-Ajraf.

Air support and a pattern of escalating raids

The ground raid was preceded by the appearance of Israeli warplanes flying at low altitude over the region. This incident aligns with a significant increase in Israeli military activity in southern Syria. Syrian government data cited by local media indicates that since December 2024, Israel has carried out over 1,000 airstrikes and more than 400 cross-border ground raids into the southern provinces.

Broader context of Israeli presence in the Golan

The increased operations follow a major geopolitical shift in late 2024 with the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime. In the ensuing instability, Israel expanded its occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights by seizing the demilitarized buffer zone established by a 1974 agreement, a move criticized as a violation of international accords and a further militarization of the border region.
