Lebanon's Health Minister Rakan Nassereddine announced Sunday that Israeli attacks have killed at least 394 people and wounded 1,130 since Monday, with women and children comprising a significant portion of the casualties. The escalation follows limited Hezbollah rocket fire amid regional tensions linked to the US-Israeli war on Iran, despite a ceasefire agreement that Israel has consistently violated since November 2024.

Lebanon's Health Ministry has released devastating casualty figures from the past week of Israeli military operations, confirming that at least 394 people have been killed and 1,130 wounded since Monday. Health Minister Rakan Nassereddine detailed the human toll during a press conference Sunday, revealing that women and children are disproportionately represented among the dead and injured.

The minister reported that 42 women and 83 children are among those killed in the attacks, accounting for nearly one-third of all fatalities. Among the wounded, 274 are women and 254 are children, figures that underscore the extensive civilian impact of the ongoing Israeli offensive as it expands across Lebanese territory.

Ceasefire Violations Continue

Despite the existence of a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah that has been in place since November 2024, Israel has persisted with near-daily military operations inside Lebanon. These sustained violations have accumulated a staggering toll: hundreds dead and thousands wounded since the agreement was supposed to halt hostilities.

The current escalation, which began Monday, followed limited rocket fire from Hezbollah conducted against the backdrop of broader regional tensions. The Iran-backed group's actions came as Israel and the United States intensified their joint military campaign against Tehran, drawing in multiple fronts across the Middle East.

Larger Context of Devastation

Sunday's figures represent only the most recent chapter in a longer and even deadlier conflict. Since Israel launched its offensive against Lebanon in October 2023, which escalated into full-scale war by September 2024, more than 4,000 Lebanese have been killed and approximately 17,000 wounded according to official counts.

The cumulative death toll reflects the intensity of Israeli operations, which have employed extensive air power and artillery against targets across Lebanon. Health infrastructure has been severely strained by the constant influx of casualties, with hospitals in affected areas struggling to maintain operations amid shortages and security concerns.

Regional War Spillover

The renewed violence in Lebanon cannot be separated from the wider regional conflagration ignited by the US-Israeli campaign against Iran. Tehran's February 28 launch of missiles and drones toward Israel and Gulf states hosting American assets triggered a new phase of conflict that has drawn in Iran's allies across the region, including Hezbollah in Lebanon.

As Washington and Tel Aviv press their offensive against Iranian targets, Hezbollah's rocket fire represents both solidarity with Tehran and an assertion of the group's own military capabilities. Israel's response has been to dramatically expand operations in Lebanon, creating a second major front alongside the strikes on Iran itself and drawing condemnation from international observers concerned about civilian protection.
