Israeli reservists describe 'pleasure' in Gaza Yellow Line killings

Israeli reserve soldiers who served in Gaza told The Associated Press that field orders to shoot anyone approaching the Yellow Line created a "jungle" atmosphere where some troops took pleasure in killing Palestinians.
Shoot-on-sight orders
Israeli reserve soldiers who participated in military operations in the Gaza Strip between October 2025 and January 2026 revealed field orders to kill anyone approaching the so-called Yellow Line, a temporary separation zone in eastern Gaza. The testimonies, published by The Associated Press, described a state of confusion regarding rules of engagement that soldiers said rendered the ceasefire agreement a "joke." One soldier in his twenties stated that orders were clear: anyone crossing or approaching the line should be shot on sight.
'Like a jungle'
The soldiers characterized the operational environment as chaotic and lacking clear protocols, with one describing the atmosphere as "like a jungle." They reported that military commanders publicly committed to the ceasefire agreement while privately expressing desires for the war to continue. The testimonies indicated that forces targeted individuals without verifying identities, with drone strikes and gunfire ordered based on intuition rather than confirmed intelligence.
Celebration of killings
One soldier reported witnessing comrades shouting in celebration and exchanging congratulations after targeting a Palestinian vehicle near the Israeli-controlled area, killing all occupants. He stated that such scenes became commonplace after the ceasefire took effect in October, adding that he saw soldiers relishing the opportunity to pursue anyone who approached the Yellow Line. Another soldier told Breaking the Silence, an Israeli NGO documenting military testimonies, that troops often acted too quickly under immense pressure to distinguish targets properly.

Casualties and context
The Israeli army responded to the allegations by stating that the Yellow Line area is a sensitive operational environment with prohibition signs, claiming that forces do not target civilians simply for approaching and must use warnings before force. Palestinian sources reported that the boundary has steadily moved westward in recent months. Israeli attacks have killed 929 Palestinians and injured 2,811 since the October ceasefire began, according to the Gaza Media Office. Since October 2023, the war has killed 72,938 Palestinians and injured more than 172,000, most of them women and children.
