An Israeli airstrike has hit the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon, killing at least 11 people and injuring four others according to Lebanese authorities, while Israel claims it targeted Hamas members.

The Lebanese Health Ministry confirmed the death toll from the aerial attack that struck a center within the Ain al-Hilweh camp located near the coastal city of Sidon. The strike, which occurred on Tuesday evening, also left four people wounded according to official statements. Lebanon's National News Agency reported that three missiles were fired at the facility inside the crowded refugee settlement, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing cross-border tensions between Israel and militant groups in Lebanon.

Conflicting Claims About the Target

The Israeli military immediately claimed responsibility for the operation, stating it had targeted Hamas members operating from within the center. This justification follows Israel's pattern of conducting strikes against what it describes as terrorist infrastructure in neighboring countries. However, the attack on a populated refugee camp represents one of the deadliest recent incidents in Lebanon and has drawn immediate condemnation from Palestinian authorities and humanitarian organizations operating in the region.

Regional Tensions Escalate

The Ain al-Hilweh camp, one of Lebanon's largest Palestinian refugee settlements, has historically been a site of occasional internal clashes but rarely suffers direct external attacks. This incident occurs amid heightened regional hostilities and expanding front lines in the conflict between Israel and Palestinian factions. The strike deepens concerns about the potential for wider regional escalation and highlights the vulnerable position of refugee populations caught in conflict zones.
