Italian health workers protest in solidarity with Palestinian medics

Medical staff gathered at over 50 hospitals across Italy to express solidarity with their Palestinian counterparts in Gaza. They denounced the war and highlighted the collapse of Gaza's health system, citing the deaths and detention of more than 1,500 healthcare workers during the conflict.
Healthcare professionals across Italy staged demonstrations on Wednesday to show solidarity with Palestinian medics in Gaza. Gatherings took place outside more than 50 hospitals nationwide, with participants denouncing the ongoing war and expressing support for colleagues working under siege.
Protesters' Motives and Condemnation
The protesters aimed to keep Italian public attention focused on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Massimo Messana, a nurse from Milan's Niguarda Hospital, stated the action was to highlight the suffering in Gaza and the complete collapse of its healthcare system. He also condemned the detention of health workers in Israeli prisons, describing harsh conditions and a denial of rights.
Casualty Figures and Accusations of a 'Double Crime'
Citing reports of over 1,500 healthcare workers killed and more than 100 detained by Israeli forces since October 2023, Messana labeled the situation a "double crime." He argued it constitutes an attack both on the medical workers themselves and on the civilian population deprived of potential lifesaving care. The latest figures from Gaza's Health Ministry report at least 70,366 Palestinians killed and 171,064 injured in the conflict.
