Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced Wednesday that Rome will play an "important" and "constructive" role in shaping the Middle East's future, with potential contributions including Palestinian police training and civil administration support. Speaking at the G7 summit in Canada, Tajani detailed Italy's €60 million reconstruction investment for Gaza while emphasizing the need to consolidate the ceasefire and ensure humanitarian supplies reach the population.

Italy is prepared to assume a significant role in determining the Middle East's trajectory, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani declared Wednesday while attending the G7 Foreign Ministers Summit in Canada. The top Italian diplomat outlined several potential avenues for his country's engagement as regional stakeholders work to establish lasting stability following the Gaza ceasefire agreement that took effect October 10.

"We'll see what kind of commitment it will be: it could be training the Palestinian police, it could be making a strong contribution to the civil administration," Tajani told ANSA news agency on the sidelines of the gathering in Canada. The minister emphasized that regardless of the specific form, Italy's participation would "certainly be constructive" and aimed at supporting positive outcomes for the region.

Financial Commitment to Reconstruction

Rome has already allocated €60 million ($69 million) toward rebuilding efforts in Gaza, with the initial €5 million tranche dispatched months ago. Tajani stressed the importance of ensuring the ceasefire holds and that essential supplies reach Gazans in need. "We must ensure that the truce in Gaza is consolidated and that all the aid and food supplies reach the population," he stated.

The Italian government's approach combines immediate humanitarian assistance with longer-term institutional support. Tajani revealed that Italy's special envoy, who has previously conducted diplomatic missions in Jordan, Ramallah, Israel, and Egypt, will now travel to the United States. This expanded diplomatic footprint aims to position Italy as "a protagonist" not only during reconstruction but also throughout "the phase that must be that of peace."

Ceasefire Framework

The current Gaza ceasefire, based on a 20-point plan advanced by US President Donald Trump, includes phased implementation beginning with hostage and prisoner exchanges. The broader agreement envisions comprehensive rebuilding of the territory and establishment of new governance mechanisms excluding Hamas, though details remain subject to ongoing negotiations among regional and international actors.

Tajani's comments at the G7 forum reflect Italy's ambition to translate its financial contributions into diplomatic influence, ensuring Roman perspectives are incorporated into the complex discussions shaping Gaza's post-conflict future.

Sudan Ceasefire Hopes

Beyond Middle East matters, Tajani addressed the devastating conflict in Sudan between the army and Rapid Support Forces that has raged since April 2023. "We hope to reach a ceasefire between the two sides," he said, expressing optimism for a resolution to the fighting that has killed thousands and displaced millions despite multiple mediation attempts.

Italy is organizing substantial humanitarian assistance for Sudan, with a plane and ship carrying supplies for children scheduled to arrive in Port Sudan before Christmas. The aid delivery demonstrates Rome's broader commitment to addressing humanitarian crises across multiple conflict zones simultaneously.
