Japan seeks dialogue with China as Taiwan security row grows

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Japan must protect its national interests through communication with China, even as Beijing reacts sharply to Tokyo’s recent security statements on Taiwan. China has demanded Japan retract remarks linking any Taiwan conflict to Japan’s self-defense rights. The issue, closely monitored by Türkiye and other regional actors, continues to strain relations between the two Asian neighbors.
Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said maintaining constructive dialogue with China is essential to safeguard Japan’s national interests, even amid rising tensions over Taiwan and Beijing’s angry response to Tokyo’s recent security comments.
Clarification in parliament
During a parliamentary debate, Takaichi said her earlier remarks — suggesting a Taiwan crisis could justify Japan’s collective self-defense — were given in response to a specific question. The Japanese government confirmed this week that its position remains unchanged and does not require further review.
Beijing increases pressure
China’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning questioned whether Japan still respects the one-China principle, accusing Tokyo of trying to downplay the dispute. She urged Japan to “correct wrongdoing” and reverse its statements, warning that merely repeating talking points will not resolve the issue.
Tourism and trade fallout
Following Tokyo’s comments, media in China reported large numbers of trip cancellations by Chinese tourists and renewed restrictions on Japanese seafood imports. Beijing also postponed a planned cultural ministers’ meeting with Japan and South Korea. Japan has pushed back on China’s safety advisories while Beijing claims Chinese nationals in Japan have faced increased security risks.
Diplomatic backdrop
The dispute comes as US President Donald Trump and China’s Xi Jinping discussed Taiwan in a recent phone call, followed by a separate call between Trump and Takaichi. Taiwan remains central to the geopolitical balance in the Asia-Pacific — a region critical to Türkiye and global trade — as Beijing insists the island is part of China while Taipei seeks international recognition.
