Japan's parliament elects Sanae Takaichi as first female premier

Sanae Takaichi, leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, has been elected as Japan's prime minister by the lower house of parliament, making her the first woman to hold the office. She secured 237 votes, surpassing the required majority, with support from a coalition partner.
Japan has entered a new political era with the election of Sanae Takaichi as its first female prime minister. The lower house of parliament chose the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) chair on Tuesday, a historic move for a G7 nation. Takaichi's election was made possible through a coalition with the Japan Innovation Party, providing the necessary support in the 465-seat chamber.
The newly elected premier secured 237 votes, comfortably exceeding the minimum threshold of 233 lawmakers required for confirmation. This parliamentary support, bolstered by the LDP's coalition partner, paved the way for her to become Japan's 104th prime minister. The vote followed the formal resignation of outgoing Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and his cabinet, which collectively stepped down to facilitate the leadership transition.
A Period of Political Instability
Takaichi's ascent follows a period of significant political turbulence for Japan's leadership. Her predecessor, Shigeru Ishiba, resigned after facing intense internal party criticism following consecutive election defeats for the LDP-led coalition. This leadership change marks the fourth resignation of a Japanese prime minister in just five years, a list that includes Shinzo Abe, Yoshihide Suga, and Fumio Kishida.
The Path Ahead in the Upper House
While the lower house has cast its decisive vote, the political process requires further confirmation. The new prime minister must now also secure support from the upper house of the parliament to solidify her government's position and embark on her legislative agenda.
