Jerusalem church leaders decry continued Gaza killings despite ceasefire

Christian leaders in Jerusalem state that hundreds of Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the October truce, using their Christmas message to call for advocacy toward a true and just peace.
Jerusalem church leaders have declared that hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza have been killed by Israeli attacks despite the ceasefire enacted on October 10. In a joint Christmas message, the patriarchs and heads of churches noted the truce allowed Christian communities more public celebrations but condemned the ongoing violence.
Ceasefire Violations and Mounting Casualties
The leaders, including the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, stated, "Despite a declared cessation of hostilities, hundreds have continued to be killed or suffer grievous injury." This aligns with reported data indicating hundreds of Israeli ceasefire violations, resulting in over 400 Palestinian deaths and more than 1,100 injuries in Gaza since the truce began. The broader death toll since October 2023 stands at nearly 71,000 Palestinians killed.
Call for Advocacy and Lasting Peace
Expressing solidarity with all who are suffering, the church leaders called for sustained advocacy to achieve "a true and just peace" in Palestine and worldwide. They highlighted that violence and assaults have also targeted people, properties, and freedoms in neighboring countries, underscoring the regional impact of the conflict.
