Kosovo faces snap polls as presidential vote fails in assembly

The Kosovo Assembly has entered a constitutional crisis after failing to secure the necessary majority to elect a new head of state before the legal deadline. With opposition parties boycotting the parliamentary sessions, the Balkan nation now faces the prospect of snap elections within 45 days as required by the constitution.

The legislative body in Pristina convened multiple times throughout the day in an attempt to select the country's next president, yet the sessions concluded without a successful outcome. Representatives from the governing Self-Determination Movement alongside delegates from non-Serb minority groups cast their ballots, but their collective support of 64 legislators fell significantly short of the constitutional threshold. The assembly requires a two-thirds supermajority—equivalent to 80 votes within the 120-seat chamber—to formally install a head of state.

Opposition boycott blocks progress

Key opposition forces including the Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Democratic League of Kosovo declined to participate in the electoral proceedings despite formal invitations from Assembly Speaker Albulena Haxhiu, who currently serves as acting president. Their refusal to attend the parliamentary sessions deprived the process of the necessary consensus required to move forward with the selection, effectively forcing the legislative body into an institutional impasse.

Early elections on the horizon

With the constitutional window for presidential selection now closed, authorities in Pristina are preparing to dissolve the assembly and schedule fresh parliamentary elections. Haxhiu is anticipated to officially announce the snap poll in the coming days, with the constitution mandating that citizens return to the ballot boxes within 45 days of the declaration. This development marks a significant political turning point for the Balkan country as it navigates this period of governmental transition.
