The Kremlin has stated that Russia's testing of a new nuclear-powered cruise missile is a necessary measure to ensure its national security. This comes after US President Donald Trump criticized the test, suggesting Moscow should instead focus on ending the Ukraine conflict.

The Kremlin has defended Russia's recent test of a nuclear-powered cruise missile as a legitimate security measure, following criticism from US President Donald Trump. Moscow insists the development of new weapons systems is essential for its defense amid what it describes as a "militaristic mood" among European nations.

Putin's Announcement and US Response

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the completion of "decisive tests" for the Burevestnik missile, a weapon first revealed in 2018 that he described as "unique" with "unlimited range." Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov reported the missile flew approximately 14,000 kilometers during a 15-hour test. In response, President Trump, speaking aboard Air Force One, downplayed the test's significance and urged Putin to focus on ending the Ukraine war instead of weapons development.

Kremlin's Justification for the Test

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded to Trump's comments by asserting Russia's sovereign right to self-defense. "Russia is consistently working to ensure its own security. It is in line with this objective that the development of new weapons systems, including the system just mentioned, is taking place," Peskov stated. He argued the test should not damage US-Russia relations, noting that while dialogue with Washington is minimal, Moscow remains open to communication.

Broader Security Context and Diplomacy

Peskov framed the weapons development within a broader security context, citing a perceived "militaristic mood" primarily in Europe as justification for Russia's actions. "Against this backdrop, Russia must do everything possible to ensure its own security," he expressed. The spokesman also commented on recent "informal contacts" between Russian and US officials, characterizing them as a "small step on a long, long road" that requires patience despite their importance.
