Kremlin says Putin has long pushed for elections in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin has advocated for Ukrainian elections "for a long time," aligning with recent remarks by US President Trump. Peskov denied discussing the matter with the US and called Ukrainian President Zelenskyy's conditional readiness for a wartime vote "quite new."

The Kremlin has stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin's advocacy for holding elections in Ukraine predates recent international discussion on the topic. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday that the issue is something Putin has been talking about "for a long time," and noted that US President Donald Trump has also "recently talked about" it.

Reaction to Zelenskyy's Conditional Offer

Peskov was responding to questions about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's statement a day earlier, in which he expressed readiness to hold a presidential election within 60-90 days if security and legal conditions could be ensured with Western help. Peskov described Zelenskyy's remarks as "quite new" but clarified that Moscow has not engaged in discussions about this specific proposal with "anyone," including the United States.

Denial of US-Russia Consultations

When pressed on whether Russian and American officials had discussed Zelenskyy's comments, Peskov directly denied any such dialogue. "We didn't have time to discuss it with anyone," he said, indicating the issue had not been a point of bilateral contact. This statement underscores the lack of formal diplomatic channels or agreements between Moscow and Washington regarding Ukraine's political processes amid the ongoing war.

Context of Election Discussions Amid War

The topic of Ukrainian elections has become a point of geopolitical commentary as the war approaches another year. While Kyiv cites martial law as a barrier, Russian officials and some Western voices have begun framing elections as a potential step toward political resolution. For neutral observers and mediators, the divergent stances highlight the profound challenges of reconciling democratic processes with active hostilities and territorial occupation.
